Alan has this to say about his work:

Painting creates order from chaos, permanence from the transitory, and solidity from the ephemeral. Painting is timeless. Painting is an act of faith. Faith in oneself to plumb the depths and create a unity with the essence of one’s secret world. Faith that feelings and vision can be united during the months, sometimes years, required to complete a piece.

Painting is about the process, not the finished product. It is the journey, not the destination. The more the artist asserts his will or attempts to impose a certain vision toward an outcome, the more the painting pushes back and asserts its own will. As much as the painting undergoes a metamorphosis during its creation, the artist is forever changed as well.

To paint is to have a great connection with artists who have come before. What is more elemental and basic, unchanged by time and technology, than paint and canvas? While artists’ materials have become more permanent and readily available, has our ability to create something as hauntingly beautiful as Vermeer or as honest as the ancient dwellers of Lascaux improved?

In the end, the only statement that matters is the paintings. It is for you to decide.
