Tom Micklin creates not just photographs, but Bromoils, a piece of art that is essentially a combination of photography and painting. You can read more about the Bromoil process here.

All of the Bromoils in this show were taken in Ireland. Even though Tom uses modern cameras and lenses and prepares the negative digitally, the end results are not very different from the Bromoilists of the early 1900s. The brushes and inks he uses are all designed to duplicate the originals. This is true even of the Lewis Bromoil paper which is used by many photographers for normal black and white images but works beautifully for Bromoil prints.

Tom says that taking pictures in Ireland was an amazing experience. "The light is similar to the Pacific Northwest, except that the overcast skies are somehow brighter and more subtle, showing detail deep into the shadows and giving the lighter tones an almost sublime quality," he says. "The abundance of churches, farms, incredible graveyards, stone buildings from 1,000 or more years ago was irresistible."
